The Ionosphere Glows.

The Ionosphere experiences a phenomenon called airglow, which is a term for the bright swaths of light that shine from Earth’s upper atmosphere. Airglow is caused when atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere shed their excess energy by emitting light, usually because they’ve become excited by the Sun. It can also occur when ionized atoms and molecules collide with and capture free electrons and subsequently eject a photon, or particle of light.
