Tapirs Are the World’s Most Primitive Large Mammals.

Tapirs are the most primitive large mammals living in the world today. They have been around for approximately 20 million years and very little about them has changed. There are four species of tapirs: the Baird's Tapir or the Central American Tapir (Tapirus bairdii), the Lowland Tapir or Brazilian Tapir (Tapirus terrestris), the Mountain Tapir or Wooly Tapir (Tapirus pinchaque), and the Malayan Tapir (Tapirus indicus). (The first 3 are native to South America and the last is native to Asia.)
