Southern White-Faced Owls can change their size to help protect themselves when threatened. When faced with predators their own size, they can puff up their bodies to appear twice their usual size, making themselves look more dangerous to other creatures. When faced with predators that are larger than them, they are able to pull their feathers very close to their bodies to make themselves seem smaller and to better blend in while they hide among tree branches.
