Polar mesospheric clouds are referred to as noctilucent or “night-shining” clouds because they are typically seen at twilight. These clouds occur at high latitudes of both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and at high altitudes. They can be observed from Earth’s surface as well as by astronauts aboard the ISS.
