Northern Cardinals Eat a Surprisingly Varied Diet.

Northern Cardinals eat a wide variety of foods, including beetles, grasshoppers, caterpillars, ants, flies, spiders, centipedes, and snails. Insects are especially common in the diet of young Northern Cardinals and in fact make up the vast majority of it. However, adult Northern Cardinals eat mostly vegetable matter such as seeds, waste grain, leaf buds, flowers, berries, and fruits.
