Male Hellbenders build chambers for breeding, then chase females away after the eggs are fertilized and guard the egg clusters themselves. They even nourish the eggs with oxygenated water by gently rocking their bodies like a fan. However, they may also eat their offspring if they get hungry enough while guarding them — this behavior is known as filial cannibalism and shows up in several amphibian species.
