Hellbenders are native to the Americas and live in well-oxygenated, unpolluted streams and rivers. Their lungs are largely vestigial; they breathe through several flaps of thick, wrinkled skin located along their sides. They absorb 95% of their oxygen through these folds and wrinkles in their skin.
