Green Herons sometimes use bait when hunting by dropping a small twig or feather into the water to lure fish closer while they stand still in the shallows and wait for their quarries to approach. They eat mostly fish but will also consume crustaceans (including crayfish), aquatic insects, frogs, tadpoles, and some land-dwellers like grasshoppers, snakes, earthworms, snails, and small rodents.
