Every Earthquake Has Both an Epicenter and a Hypocenter.

The hypocenter of an earthquake refers to the location beneath the Earth’s surface where the rupture of the fault begins. The epicenter of the earthquake — generally a much more well-known term — specifically refers to the location directly above the hypocenter. Essentially, the epicenter is located on the surface of the Earth and the hypocenter is located below the surface.
