An elephant’s skin can be up to 1 inch thick in some places, but that thick skin is surprisingly sensitive. Elephants can feel it when even just a small fly lands on them. They’re also very sensitive to sunburn. Elephants often spray themselves with water or roll in mud or dust to protect their sensitive skin from the sun and biting insects.
