Downy Woodpeckers are the smallest woodpecker species in North America. They generally measure 5 to 7 inches long and have a wingspan of 9.8 to 11.8 inches. Most individuals weigh between .7 and 1 ounce. Males can be identified by the characteristic red tuft near the top of their heads.
