Desert Tortoises Hibernate for Most of the Year.

Desert Tortoises are native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. They escape cold winters and hot summers by creating burrows deep in the sand. They hibernate in these burrows for up to 9 months each year; most of their active time is in the late spring and early fall.
