Cat Tongues Are Rough Due to Papillae.

Cat tongues are rough because they are covered with papillae. These are rows of rough bumps that help cats scrape hair off the hides and meat off the bones of their prey. Papillae are also useful when a cat drinks, as they help hold water on the cat’s tongue. Cats of all sizes — from lions to domestic pets — have papillae.
