Cardinals Get Their Red Plumage from Their Food.

Cardinals are mostly granivorous, but they also eat insects and a wide variety of fruits, including wild grapes, dogwood berries, and mulberries. These fruits contain carotenoids, which are responsible for the red colors in their feathers. (These same compounds also create the yellow, orange, and pink hues seen in other birds’ feathers.)
