Buffleheads forage for their food underwater and swallow it whole. Their diet depends on their location and the time of year. In the summer months, Buffleheads living near freshwater eat aquatic insects, while those living near the ocean eat crustaceans. Buffleheads living in all locations are also known to eat mollusks in the winter months and some aquatic plants in the fall.
