African Spurred Tortoises Dig Very Large Dens.

African Spurred Tortoises dig underground dens up to 10 feet deep. They rest in these dens to keep cool during the heat of the day, as their underground homes are significantly cooler than surface temperatures, which can reach up to 120°F. In fact, these dens are so useful that if one is abandoned by a tortoise, other animals will use it to find shelter from the heat.
